Prelims - the dawn of success

It was a pleasant spring evening of March 2019 when I latched on to the metallic rod inside the woman's compartment of the Blue Line Delhi Metro. I was returning from the New Delhi Station after waving goodbye to my mother on her short trip to our hometown Kolkata. Suddenly my gaze fell on a girl ( seated inside the metro)  who kept revising her notes  from an IAS Prelims test series. She was unpertubed by the hussle and bustle inside the train and got down at Mandi House station , with the booklet still in hand.

Yes , you guessed it right ...the season of prelims 2019 had approached. If the long and ardous journey of over an year  ( before the very first attempt) is like a tunnel, then the commencement of the prelims exam is like the first ray of hope at the end of the tunnel. Yes , I  have not finished the optional syllabus, yes I have not done enough answer writing , yes I  have not written a single essay in this time. Yet , the alarm bells of the opportunity to sit in the exam and make the first move towards my goal filled me with positivity.

I knew there were lakhs of motivated minds having the same feelings as me and destiny would choose only some random 12000s of them. But, who cares about the numbers ? I had to only answer to the call of my conscience ..I had to give justice to the positive urge inside me and for that my playing field was limited to myself, my pen and the question paper and OMR sheet to be given to me on the auspicious day of 2nd June 2019.

The word "competition" always appeared very confusing to me in the context of UPSC. Each one of us have different stories to tell. Each one of us face unique difficulties as we navigate through the tunnel. Yet , somewhere down the line our " aspirations" converge. But , we often forget that if there are lakhs of competitors who are ready to give us a stiff competition, then I am also one among them. So , ultimately it is a zero sum game!  It is like those numerous polarized dipoles inside a diamagnetic material, who has individual non zero dipole moments , but ultimately the net moment is zero ! Hence , think beyond the race. The more you think of the numbers , the more the amount of cortisol ( stress hormone) generation and hence the less optimal your performance. Lets focus on ourselves as an individual and adjust all that we can do within our impenetrable boundaries. Clearly,  we are not just an aspirant !
